Today, August 30, marks the 79th birth anniversary of Baba Harbhajan Singh, born in 1946. Baba Harbhajan Singh, also known as the Saint of Nathula, is remembered as a soldier who continues to serve both in life and in spirit at the Nathula border between India and China in East Sikkim. Despite his passing in 1968 at the young age of 22 while on duty in Sikkim, he is still believed to guard the Nathula border.

Revered by both the Indian and Chinese armies, Baba is honored even today. During flag meetings between the two nations, the Chinese army sets aside a chair for him, acknowledging his undying spirit and commitment.
Striking Facts about Saint Captain Harbhajan Singh:

Guardian of the Border: Baba is said to warn soldiers of impending attacks at least three days in advance, continuing his vigil over the international boundary.

Respected by Both Armies: In every flag meeting between India and China, a chair is set aside for him by the Chinese army.

Baba Mandir: Built in his honor, the shrine includes three rooms—his office, storeroom, and living room. His belongings, including his bed, shoes, slippers, and uniform, are preserved in perfect condition.

Daily Rituals: His room is cleaned each morning, and soldiers often find his bed crumpled or his shoes muddy, as if he has returned from patrol.

Presence Felt: Soldiers have frequently reported sensing his presence and discovering signs that he visits the camps and his post.

Continuing Service: Baba Harbhajan Singh is still accorded the honor of drawing a Major’s salary every month and is granted two months of annual leave.

Annual Journey: On September 11 each year, his belongings are sent to his hometown. A berth is reserved for him on the train from New Jalpaiguri station in Siliguri, which remains empty for the entire journey, accompanied by a team of soldiers.

Army Vigilance: The Army stays on high alert even during his annual leave, maintaining the same discipline and respect as when he was alive.

Some soldiers never die, and Baba Harbhajan Singh’s legacy continues to inspire and protect those who guard the nation’s borders.
