Sikkim Tourism Registration Goes Online: Step-by-Step Guide for Hotels, Homestays, Restaurants and Other Establishments

Gangtok, Sikkim: The Tourism and Civil Aviation Department of the Government of Sikkim has launched a new Online Registration and Renewal System for Tourism Establishments, allowing eligible tourism businesses to apply for fresh registration and renewal, make payments online and download their certificates digitally.

The system was officially launched on August 26, 2026, as part of the state’s efforts to digitalise tourism-related government services and reduce the need for repeated visits to government offices.

The new service is integrated with Sikkim GO, the state’s Single Sign-On (SSO) platform. According to the government, applicants can complete the process from home or through a cybercafe and receive SMS notifications during different stages of their application.

Which Tourism Businesses Can Apply Online?

At present, the online system covers six categories of tourism establishments:

  1. Hotels and Resorts
  2. Homestays
  3. Bed & Breakfast establishments
  4. Service Apartments
  5. Holiday Homes
  6. Restaurants

The Sikkim government says eligible establishments can use the system for both fresh registration and annual renewal, including digital fee payment and online certificate download.

Registration services for Travel Agents, Adventure Tour Operators, Outdoor Photographers and Tourist Guides are currently being provided offline. The government has said these services are expected to be brought under the online system during the second phase, within the next two to three months.

How to Apply for Sikkim Tourism Registration or Renewal Online

A government tutorial demonstrates the application process through the Sikkim GO-linked tourism registration portal.

Step 1: Create a Sikkim GO Account

Applicants must first register on the Sikkim GO portal.

Visit:

https://sso.sikkim.gov.in

Sikkim GO provides a single login for integrated state government services. During registration, applicants provide their required contact information and create a username and password.

Applicants can then access the tourism service either by searching for the relevant tourism service after logging in or by visiting:

https://tourismregistration.sikkim.gov.in

These are the application routes identified by the Government of Sikkim.

Step 2: Start a New Application

After logging into the tourism service, applicants can access their dashboard and select “New Application.”

The system then asks applicants to select the appropriate tourism establishment category, such as hotel/resort, homestay, bed & breakfast, service apartment, holiday home or restaurant.

Step 3: Enter Applicant Details

Applicants need to provide their basic information, including details such as:

  • Applicant’s name
  • Educational qualification
  • Mobile number
  • District
  • Permanent and residential address
  • Relevant registration/certificate information
  • Training or capacity-building certificate details, where applicable
  • The applicable grade being sought

Applicants should ensure that the information matches their supporting documents before proceeding.

Step 4: Upload Photograph and Signature

The application requires the applicant’s passport-size photograph and signature.

The portal provides an image-cropping option before the files are saved.

Applicants can also save the application as a draft and return to complete it later.

Step 5: Enter Establishment Details

The next section concerns the tourism establishment itself.

Applicants may need to provide:

  • Establishment name
  • Owner’s name
  • District
  • Contact number
  • Email address
  • Website, if available
  • Establishment address
  • Postal address
  • Landmark
  • PIN code
  • Distance from the nearest railway station

The website field is optional according to the tutorial.

Step 6: Add Management and Staff Information

Applicants must provide details about the establishment’s manager, including qualifications.

The application also asks for staff-related information, including details concerning permanent staff, local and non-local employees and other operational information.

The applicant must also indicate relevant details such as whether the establishment operates from an owned or leased/rented building and whether staff have received required training.

Step 7: Enter Accommodation Details

For accommodation establishments, applicants need to provide information about their rooms and available facilities.

Depending on the establishment, the portal asks about facilities such as:

  • Television
  • Intercom
  • Attached bathrooms
  • Room heaters
  • Central heating
  • Geysers

The information needs to be entered according to the actual facilities available at the property.

Step 8: Facilities, Amenities and Accessibility

The application then moves to facilities and compliance information.

Applicants may need to indicate whether the establishment provides facilities such as a reception area and dining/rest facilities, along with other common-area and accessibility amenities.

Where a reception facility is available, the application asks for the reception area’s size.

Step 9: Parking, Recreation and Safety

The next section covers parking, recreation and safety arrangements.

Where parking is available, applicants may need to provide:

  • Parking area
  • Vehicle capacity

The application also asks about recreational facilities and various safety provisions.

For establishments with fire-safety equipment, the relevant details must be entered in the designated section.

Step 10: Kitchen Details

For establishments where kitchen facilities are applicable, applicants must provide information on the available cuisine and kitchen setup.

The application also covers areas such as:

  • Kitchen facilities
  • Storage facilities
  • Utilities
  • Equipment

Applicants should select the options that accurately reflect their establishment.

Step 11: Upload Establishment Photographs

The portal requires photographs of the establishment.

Applicants need to select the appropriate photograph according to the description provided on screen, upload it, crop it where necessary and save it.

The same procedure is followed for the other photographs requested by the application.

Step 12: Upload Required Documents

Applicants must upload the supporting documents specified in the application.

The process involves choosing the relevant file from the device and uploading it through the portal.

The exact documents required can vary according to the type of tourism establishment and application.

Step 13: Review and Submit

Before submitting, applicants can preview the completed application.

This is an important stage because applicants should verify all entered information and uploaded documents before clicking “Confirm and Submit.”

Once submitted, the system generates an Application ID.

Applicants should keep this ID safely for future reference and application-status tracking.

What Happens After Submission?

The application does not necessarily end with online submission.

According to the tutorial, an inspection team will visit the establishment after submission. The inspection report is subsequently uploaded for departmental review.

Following approval, the applicant receives a notification regarding payment.

Step 14: Make the Required Online Payment

Applicants need to log back into the Sikkim GO/tourism portal after receiving the payment notification.

A “Pay Online” option becomes available, through which the applicable payment can be completed digitally.

Step 15: Download the Tourism Certificate

After the application is approved and the certificate is issued, the applicant receives a notification.

The applicant can then log into the dashboard and select the download certificate option.

The registration or renewal certificate can therefore be obtained digitally rather than requiring the applicant to repeatedly visit a government office.

Why the New Sikkim Tourism Portal Matters

The new system represents a significant shift towards digital delivery of tourism-related services in Sikkim.

The government says the platform is intended to improve accessibility, efficiency and convenience for tourism stakeholders across all six districts of the state. It also allows applications, notifications, payments and certificate issuance to be handled through a digital workflow.

The initiative is part of Sikkim’s wider move toward technology-enabled administration. The Tourism Department has also transitioned its internal file processing to an e-Office system.

Important: Tourism Registration Is a Legal Requirement

Sikkim’s Registration and Licensing of Tourist Trade Act, 2022 provides the legal framework for registration and licensing of tourism entities in the state.

The Act states that tourism entities must obtain the appropriate authorisation before conducting tourism-related operations, subject to the applicable rules, policies and procedures.

The legislation covers a broad range of tourism businesses and services, including accommodation establishments, travel agents, tour operators, guides and adventure tourism-related operators.

For eligible establishments, the process now brings application submission, status updates, payment and certificate download into a digital workflow through Sikkim GO.

Tourism businesses planning to register or renew should use the official government portals and ensure that the information and supporting documents submitted online are accurate and complete.

TravelWire will continue tracking major changes to tourism rules, registration procedures, permits and travel-related services across Sikkim and Northeast India.
