Lachen in North Sikkim has reopened to tourists following the restoration of the Lachen road stretch at Taram Chu. In view of the current road and weather conditions, the Mangan district administration has introduced specific traffic timings for vehicles travelling along the Lachen–Lachung corridor.
According to an order issued on September 10, 2026, all tourist vehicles and other light vehicles heading from Gangtok or Mangan towards Lachen and Lachung must reach and cross the Toong Check Post by 4 pm. Vehicles reaching the checkpoint after the deadline will not be allowed to continue towards the two destinations.
The same 4 pm cut-off has been imposed on vehicles travelling back from Lachen and Lachung towards Mangan and Gangtok. Local authorities have been instructed to ensure that vehicles leave Lachen and Lachung sufficiently early so that journeys do not extend into the night.
Meanwhile, the movement of heavy vehicles and trucks will continue to operate through the Sanklang–Saffo–Shipgyer route, as prescribed under an earlier order dated August 29, 2026.
The Mangan Superintendent of Police, along with police personnel and staff deployed at various check posts, have been directed to strictly implement the new regulations. The Pipons of Lachen and Lachung have also been asked to communicate the instructions to local residents, drivers and other concerned stakeholders.
The revised traffic arrangements have taken effect immediately and will remain applicable until further orders from the district administration.
